The predictions of the ancient Maya for 2012

in: Maya

The ancient Maya from Central America created a complex calendar which ends on December 21, 2012. Today, there is a lot of media attention being given to this date, with much speculation about its potential meaning. Some think it could be the end of time, the culmination of nations at Armageddon, or possibly an awakening of consciousness.

There is scientific fact that there has been an escalation in the number of natural disasters as the years progress, possibly leading to an apocalypse, but is superstition thrown into the mix as well?

This website will present arguments from leaders in the fields of science, research and journalism, who will explain what significance December 21, 2012 may actually have and why we should pay attention to it. Is there a basis for concern? Should we be delving more deeply into the meaning of this date as some kind of supernatural event? The ancient Maya also have traditions and writings that convey the idea about the end of an age, one that has lasted here on Earth for the past 5,000 years.

In the center of this fixation on 2012 are appalling world conditions and some feel as if they are starved spiritually. But what about the scientific side of things? There is evidence that notable changes have occurred, with different eras and time periods having significant events happen in each of them. Possibly it is time that serious attention is paid to these facts.

The Maya had the idea that certain periods of time would be repeated throughout what at that time was the future to them. They were not alone in this train of thought, as other cultures also have parallel ideas that world ages would have stages or cycles repeated, all with beginnings, or highs, and endings, or lows. This may be different from the way people view time today, where past, present and future are firm and established.

Legends and myths have spread across the world that speak of civilizations meeting a catastrophic end that coincide with astronomical cycles and the alignment of the stars. For example, in Arizona, the Hopi have the view, according to their prophecy, that this is a progression from the fourth world to the fifth world. And as stated previously, the Mayan civilizations believe that the end of a great cycle will come in 2012.
