Many people just spend their time worthlessly on being worried so much on things with remote possibility to happen. However, when the scientists warn humanity of the possibility of a devastating event to happen, everybody in the government most especially those involved in the disaster coordinating council takes this warning seriously.
Threat from Outer Space
In the year 2000, the British government formed a commission which aims to study on the possibility of a collision between the Earth and any Near Earth Objects whizzing through the space. As reported by the BBC, the Near Earth Objects Task Force will closely observe these objects. British experts claim that the chance of being hit or killed by an asteroid is 750 more than of winning the lottery.
In the previous year, an object passed between the Earth and the Moon which could have created a damaging impact had it collided with the Earth.
Asteroids hitting the earth can be very destructive. It is believed to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs when it hit our planet 65 million years ago. In 1992, the National Geographic magazine reported that a piece of football –sized rock tumbling down from the space crashed into a car in New York City. In 1908, a meteor landed into a Siberian forest putting about 800 miles of its area into flame.
On average, a big object hits us every 10,000 years, while something forceful as 10 atomic bombs crashes every 100,000 years. However, there’s nothing to worry at this time since the possibility of a collision is yet remote.
Will Wall of Water Wash East Coast?
Volcano experts exposed the extent of destruction if a volcano in the Canary Islands would fall into the Atlantic Ocean. They said that this could send a wall of water or a tsunami to submerge much of the East Coast of the United States. The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma could send 500 billion tons of rock to the ocean if it would erupt. This could cause a 2,100 feet high and 25 feet splash across the ocean towards America at 40 mph. By the time it would reach the US, the wave would decrease in height to 160 feet tall but could still damage up to 12 miles inland.
In 1998, an earthquake with its epicenter underwater created a tidal wave which killed about 2,000 people when it hit Papua New Guinea. In 1958, a cliff fell into an ocean at Letuya Bay causing a strong water wall which uprooted the trees and washed away the soil 1,640 feet above sea level.
This time, the scientists say that it would take decades for Cumbre Vieja to erupt again and when that happens, it may not be catastrophic by then.
Yellowstone Explosion Could Freeze Earth
Based on what the scientists have declared, a supervolcano beneath the Yellowstone National Park could be overdue for an eruption. Its eruption could send ash, dust, sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. This could create a long-lasting cold wave that could destroy plants and animals to their extinction.
Yellowstone is known to erupt every 600,000 years and is now 40,000 years overdue which has made the volcano watchers nervous. There was a movement in the chamber of molten rock beneath the earth’s surface as shown in the satellite images.
A supervolcano is formed when a mountain around the crater collapses during the eruption creating caldera, a large crater.
